Search engine optimization is the work of making your website findable by people who are already looking for what you sell. This guide covers the basics: what SEO actually is, what it can realistically do for a small business, and where to start.
What Is Search Engine Optimization?
SEO is the set of technical and content changes that improve where your site appears in organic search results. Organic means unpaid — you earn the position rather than buying it.
It divides into two halves. On-page work happens on your site: the words on a page, how it is structured, how fast it loads. Off-page work happens elsewhere: other sites linking to you, business citations, reviews. Both feed the same outcome.

Why SEO Matters for Small Businesses
Search is where buying decisions start. Someone typing “Wix SEO expert” or “emergency plumber near me” has already decided they need the service. They are only choosing who provides it. Ranking on page one puts you in that decision; ranking on page three means you are not considered at all.
What that gives a small business:
Visibility in front of people actively searching for your service, not a broad audience you interrupt
Traffic with no cost per click, unlike paid ads that stop the moment you stop paying
A channel that keeps producing after the work is done, rather than resetting each month
Ground held against competitors bidding for the same customers
On-Page and Off-Page SEO
On-page SEO covers everything you control directly: page titles, heading structure, content quality, internal links, page speed, mobile layout. Start here, because none of it depends on anyone else. Our on-page SEO guide walks through each element.
Off-page SEO covers signals from outside your site: links from other websites, directory citations, customer reviews, brand mentions. It builds slower and is harder to fake, which is usually why two similar pages rank differently.
Underneath both sits technical SEO — whether search engines can crawl, render and index your pages at all. If that layer is broken, the other two do not matter. See the technical SEO guide for the checks worth running first.
What SEO Can and Cannot Do
Setting expectations properly saves a lot of frustration.
It can: bring consistent traffic without per-click cost, compound over months as pages gain authority, and win nearby customers through local search and Google Business Profile.
It cannot: work overnight — three to six months is a realistic window before meaningful movement; rescue content that has nothing useful to say; guarantee a specific position, since no one controls the ranking system; or make up for an unclear offer. SEO brings people to the page. The page still has to convince them.
